The international standard ISO 17025 specifies the requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. This includes testing and calibrations carried out using standardized methods, non-standardized methods, and methods developed by the laboratory itself.

The first version of this standard was published in 1999 and replaced the previous EN 45001. A key aspect of ISO 17025 is the requirements for the quality management system of laboratories. The standard includes all the requirements that testing and calibration laboratories need to demonstrate that they:

  • Operate with a well-functioning management system with full process control
  • Are technically competent
  • Are capable of delivering technically valid results
